Accelerate Action: Honoring Women and Showcasing Ugandan Women Living in Belgium

Every year on March 8th, the world unites to celebrate International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to honoring women’s achievements, advocating for gender equality, and driving change. This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” is a powerful reminder that progress in women’s empowerment must be intentional and continuous.

For Ugandan women living in Belgium, the day is not just about celebration—it’s about recognition, reflection, and action. Women have always been integral to the workforce, the community, and the home, yet they continue to face unique challenges in professional and personal spaces.

Women in the Workforce: Milestones & Challenges

Women’s contributions to the workforce have evolved over centuries:

  • Ancient Civilizations: Women worked in agriculture, textiles, and domestic roles.
  • Middle Ages: Some women engaged in trade and crafts, but many were confined to home duties.
  • 19th Century: The Industrial Revolution saw women working in factories under difficult conditions.
  • World Wars: Women took over roles traditionally held by men, proving their capability beyond household responsibilities.
  • Late 20th Century to Present: Women gained legal protections, workplace rights, and leadership roles. Despite these strides, challenges like the gender pay gap and underrepresentation in certain fields persist.
